No stress at the airport, hotel, or restaurant. PDF, examples, humor, and cheat sheets. ----- This piece was originally written for a Ukrainian-speaking audience as a travel-English reference. The English vocabulary lists below stand on their own for any traveller building a survival kit of words. Why these 1000 words are your ticket to freedom Imagine you land in a new country, and within a few minutes you: find your own way out of the airport, order a coffee without mistakes, understand where your bus is going, talk to a guide, a doctor, or a police officer — without Google Translate. This is possible even without perfect English, as long as you have the right words on hand. This longread is your linguistic travel kit. We've gathered the 1000 most useful English words and phrases that will let you: travel freely and confidently, find common ground in any situation, and finally get rid of the fear of "what if I don't understand or can't explain?" No grammar cramming. No needless academism. Only the words that actually work on the road, at the airport, in a café, in a crisis, in conversation. How to use this guide The whole list is broken into 10 thematic blocks of 100 words each. You can learn gradually — 10–20 words a day. How we chose these words The goal of this guide isn't to teach you all of English, but to give you the most useful minimum that lets you survive, communicate, and feel confident on a trip. Here's how we built the selection: Focus on real situations. We studied hundreds of travellers' dialogues — in hotels, airports, restaurants, clinics, on the streets of big and small cities. Word frequency. We used databases of the most-used words in English-speaking environments (for example, from the Oxford 3000, the British Council Travel Corpus), but kept only those that are truly needed on the road. End-to-end travel scenarios. From arrival at the airport — to cases where something went wrong (a lost passport, calling a doctor, booking problems). The words are chosen to cover the entire trajectory of a trip. The "1 word = 1 function" principle. The list has no rare synonyms or poetic expressions. Only functional words: the ones that help you act, understand, and react. Universality. We avoided regional dialectisms (British or American exceptions) and instead chose the clearest formulations, which work in New York, in London, and in Asia. A memorization strategy: how to learn 1000 words and not give up 1000 words — sounds like a lot. But if you break it down correctly, it's realistic to learn in 1–3 months, even if you've never studied English seriously. 🧠 The "10×100" method We divided all the words into 10 thematic blocks of 100 words: each block is a separate sphere of life: the airport, food, hotels, transport, etc.; each set of 100 words is a logically connected group that's easy to remember and use together. 📆 Tips for memorization 20 words a day — and you'll finish the whole list in less than 2 months. Repeat on a 1–3–7–14 day schedule (simple spaced repetition). Use these words in your thoughts, in short sentences, in notes, even in conversations with yourself. Listen to the pronunciation, repeat out loud, add gestures. This activates memory on every level. 📱 Tools that will help Anki / Quizlet — create cards or use ours (links at the end of the guide). Google Translate / DeepL + audio pronunciation — great for practice on the go. Sticky Notes or a diary — write the words down on paper and place them around your home (on the fridge, the mirror, the laptop). 💡 The main rule — don't cram, play. Words are remembered better when you connect them to life: Come up with your own examples. Pair the words with trips you've already taken or are planning. Watch movies or travel blogs in English — and recognize familiar words in real use. | | | | | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 1 | ✈️ Airport and flights | passport, flight, boarding, visa, luggage, delay, transfer | pass through control, find your flight, sort out a baggage problem | | 2 | 🏨 Accommodation | reservation, room, shower, towel, check-in, deposit | check into a hotel, sort out a comfort issue, ask about amenities | | 3 | 🍽 Restaurants and food | menu, dish, gluten-free, delicious, tip, bill | order food, explain a diet or allergy, pay | | 4 | 🚌 Transport | bus, metro, stop, route, car rental, ticket | get from point A to point B, buy tickets, check the schedule | | 5 | 💊 Health and pharmacy | pain, fever, first-aid kit, insurance, symptom, doctor | ask for help, buy medicine, explain your condition | | 6 | 🚨 Safety and emergencies | stolen, lost, accident, police, documents, emergency help | act fast in a critical situation | | 7 | 🗺 Navigation and getting around the city | map, turn, street, museum, sign, get lost | find your way, ask for directions, use public transport | | 8 | 🗣 Communication and politeness | hello, thank you, please, sorry, repeat, I don't understand | keep a conversation going, approach strangers, be polite | | 9 | 🎭 Culture, leisure, conversational phrases | interesting, tradition, guide, excursion, photo, cool, how to say | talk about impressions, ask about the local culture, not sound like a robot | | 10 | 🛍 Shopping | how much does it cost, discount, size, payment, return | find the thing you need, haggle, return an item | How to use it Pick the block that's relevant to you today (for example, "Airport" before departure).
